His sister Rozi Kong said Peter died of an infection at 12.40pm.
He left behind three sons, including a doctor.
Peter’s other sister Angela Kong said her brother’s remains would arrive at his son’s house in Taman Fulliwa today and would be buried at the Buddhist cemetery near Taman Fulliwa, after funeral services on Wednesday (Feb 1) at 2 pm.
Peter was a prominent tycoon, having pioneered Labuan’s most important sea transport, the roll on-roll off (ro-ro) ferry service that served the Labuan-Menumbok-Labuan route for over a decade via Labuan Ferry Sdn Bhd.
Prior to pioneering the ro-ro ferry business operation, Peter was known for opening the popular club, Jupiter Eight (J8).
He was one of the pioneers of MCA in Labuan and later became the Labuan MCA youth leader (in the 1990s).
Later he joined Sabah-based party UPKO as Labuan UPKO advisor in 2017, before moving to Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah as deputy president for the Chinese quota. He was known to have been vocal on many public issues.
Peter bought the oldest hotel in Labuan, Waterfront Hotel (formerly owned by businessman Tan Sri Chua Ma Yu’s family), and later named it the Billion Waterfront Resort.
Journalists in Labuan and Sabah knew him as a friendly businessman who often entertained newsmen whenever they had news coverage assignments in Labuan.
